How to Pull a Trailer Safely

Make sure you check the equipment needed to pull a trailer before you set out on your journey. Ensure that the trailer is safely connected to the hitch and that the signals and brake lights are working. Lots of states require vehicles pulling a trailer to drive in the slower right hand lanes so check the state you are driving in to make sure you abide by the law.

Many motorists find that the most difficult part of pulling a trailer is making turns. The turn must be taken wide enough so that the following trailer does not hit telephone poles or other obstacles. Cutting the corner could pull the trailer off balance and cause a collision with other vehicles and pedestrians. If you find you have taken the corner too tight, try and stay calm and stop. Check the road behind you is clear, back up the trailer a little and take the turn wider this time.

The increased weight of pulling a trailer means that extra stopping room is required, and the larger the load, the longer it will take you to stop. It is a good idea to test the stopping distance needed so that you are prepared and remember to keep a safe distance from the vehicles in front.
