Road Changes for U.S. 11 Concern Slidell

Slidell officials are concerned about a new proposal to widen some of the US 11 stating that it will not improve traffic flow but will cause jams.

One of the elements of the plan is to eliminate six left hand turns off the highway and the officials from Slidell state they were not consulted about the changes and are concerned about how the restriction on turns will affect the heavy trucks which leave an industrial site saying they would now have to come further into the town. The problem is exacerbated when traffic backs up into Slidell when there is construction or an accident on U.S. 11 but cutting off the exits would make the situation worse.

The state is proposing to widen the bridge from two lanes with no shoulders to four lanes with shoulders and they say they have done the necessary analysis to prove that it will help the traffic situation and to remove some traffic signals, saying it is easier for vehicles to make a U turn and then turn right.

At this time there is no schedule for the project but Slidell officials say they will write a letter outlining the concerns they have and hope they will be taken into consideration.

How to Pull a Trailer Safely

Make sure you check the equipment needed to pull a trailer before you set out on your journey. Ensure that the trailer is safely connected to the hitch and that the signals and brake lights are working. Lots of states require vehicles pulling a trailer to drive in the slower right hand lanes so check the state you are driving in to make sure you abide by the law.

Many motorists find that the most difficult part of pulling a trailer is making turns. The turn must be taken wide enough so that the following trailer does not hit telephone poles or other obstacles. Cutting the corner could pull the trailer off balance and cause a collision with other vehicles and pedestrians. If you find you have taken the corner too tight, try and stay calm and stop. Check the road behind you is clear, back up the trailer a little and take the turn wider this time.

The increased weight of pulling a trailer means that extra stopping room is required, and the larger the load, the longer it will take you to stop. It is a good idea to test the stopping distance needed so that you are prepared and remember to keep a safe distance from the vehicles in front.
